About the Society The Archimedeans, or Cambridge University Mathematical Society, is open to anyone in Cambridge with an interest in mathematics. On the academic side, we arrange fortnightly speaker meetings, where distinguished academics from around the UK, and occasionally abroad, come to talk to us. These talks are aimed at a general audience, so will be suitable for all undergraduates. We have also recently started a Seminars for Undergraduates Subgroup, which aims to provide undergraduates with interactive seminars, also fortnightly, to give them an insight into cutting edge mathematics, and what it is like to do research. We also organise several social events throughout the year. As well as the usual Christmas Party and May Week Garden Party, we hold more unusual events, such as punt trips, croquet matches and problems drives. This year, it looks like the social events will be bigger, better and more numerous than ever. Each year, we produce a journal — Eureka — which contains brief articles of interest to undergraduate mathematicians, as well as book reviews and problems taken from our annual Problems Drive. Finally, we provide a bookshop for our members, so that you can save yourself lots of money when you stock up your books for the year, and sell your books back to us at the end of the year. More information about all of these aspects can be found by browsing the site. If the above sounds tempting, here's how to join. |
