A Mladen Petrić double did all the damage for Hamburger SV as the northerners consolidated fifth spot in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 success at 1. FC Köln, and there was joy elsewhere for VfL Wolfsburg, who saw off visitors Hannover 96 2-1.

Inconsistent form
HSV have been inconsistent in recent weeks, dropping behind their title rivals in the race for honours, but they now find themselves just four points behind the leaders after Croatian striker Petrić plundered a pair of headed goals in the 15th and 31st minutes to take his championship tally to seven for the season. Milivoje Novakovič reduced the deficit for the home side with 83 minutes gone, but Martin Jol's troops held on to move level with Hertha BSC Berlin on points.

Own goal
Wolfsburg are now just one place behind as they climbed from tenth thanks to their three-point haul. Cristian Zaccardo broke the deadlock for the home side with 33 minutes gone and although Jiří Štajner levelled the scores a minute shy of the hour mark, the same player put through his own net just five minutes later to hand Wolfsburg victory. Goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz's late dismissal for upending Edin Dzeko hardly helped the visitors, though midfielder Jan Rosenthal then distinguished himself by saving Dzeko's penalty.
