After making a winning start to their UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009 Group 5 qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win against Portugal, Slovakia were brought back to earth with a 4-0 home defeat against Ukraine in Senec.
Decisive half
Most of the damage was done in the first 45 minutes as Ukraine had raced into a three-goal lead before half-time. Vera Dyatel (5), Lyudmyla Pekur (16). And Darya Apanashchenko (38) scored for the visitors before Nataliya Zinchenko added a fourth with eleven minutes remaining. "We lost against very good team," said Slovakia coach František Urvay. "Ukraine were better than us, with a very strong squad and it was plain for all to see on the pitch. After the break our players fought harder - it wasn't enough to turn the match around but I must to praise the team effort." Slovakia's next qualifying match is again Ukraine again on 20 May.
