Two teams of four contestants and one celebrity captain competed. In each round, one team was brought to a large desk center stage, with three contestants seated at the desk and one contestant seated behind them. The captain always sat in the second seat to the left. The object of the round was to get the player in back to answer five questions correctly. A word would be shown to two players, who would then have to ask a question leading to that word by taking turns building one word at a time to the question. If the answer was given away, or if one player used more than one word at a time, the answer was thrown out. When the question was completed, one of the players would ring a bell, eliciting a response by the back player. If correct, the back player moved to a different seat, where another question would then be created by the two players sitting there. The team set the time that it took for the back player to travel to the right end of the desk and back. Once this was completed, the second team was brought down and attempted to beat the time set by the first using a different packet of answers.

The team that cleared their set of answers in the fastest time won the round. The first round was worth 250 points, the second was worth 500, the third 750 and the fourth 1250. The first team to score 1500 points won the game and $1 per point and advanced to the bonus round. In the event that one team won by way of a "clean sweep" - winning the first three rounds - they got to play the bonus round twice.

In the bonus round, the four question-builders all stood behind the answering player, and had 60 seconds to get seven questions correct. The first question was built between all four players. Afterwards, one team member would leave the desk and the three remaining players would build the second question. Another player would leave the desk for the third question, and the celebrity alone asked the fourth question. Players then returned one at a time until all four were back for the seventh and final question. If the team got seven right answers in under 60 seconds, they won $10,000; otherwise, they earned $200 for each right answer they did manage.

Early in the run, only the winning team would return for a maximum of five days. Later, all eight players remained on the show for a full week, switching celebrity captains on each episode.
