FC Vaduz, the top side in Liechtenstein who play in the Swiss Super League, have named former West Germany midfielder Pierre Littbarski as the new coach of following Heinz Hermann's dismissal.
Difficult start
Vaduz won promotion to the Swiss top flight for the first time in 2007/08 but are third from bottom after 13 games with eleven points. The 50-year-old Hermann, Switzerland most capped player of all time with 117 international appearances, took charge in July 2007 but has now been dismissed along with his assistant Vittorio Caruso and goalkeeping coach Stephan Lehmann.
Foreign postings
Littbarski has signed a two-year contract as head coach and sporting director at his new club and will be assisted by Robert Jaspert while Thomas Szabo will act as goalkeeping coach. A FIFA World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, the 48-year-old Littbarski has spent much of his coaching career outside Europe. He had two spells as coach of Japanese side Yokohama FC, and after a season with MSV Duisburg in 2001/02, he has had spells at Sydney FC, Japan's Avispa Fukuoka FC and Iranian side Saipa FC.
Sole place
Liechtenstein has no formal league structure, with the nation's sole UEFA Cup place going to the winners of the Liechtenstein Cup. Vaduz have won the last eleven editions of that competition.
