Lips' Christmas on Mars Due on DVD in October

Holy geez. Christmas on Mars, the so-called "fantastical and disturbing humanistic freakout" film which those fantastical and humanistic freaker-outers in the Flaming Lips have been putting together since around the turn of the millenium, is finally headed to the comfort of your living room.

The film, which premiered in late spring at the Sasquatch! Festival and has been making the festival rounds ever since, will get a DVD release in October from Warner Bros. What's more, the DVD will be accompanied by a CD of the film's score.

So what's in store for this mysterious Martian epic? Welp, it's just shy of 90 minutes in length, and according to this handy (if potentially spoileriffic) description, "The long awaited feature film by the Flaming Lips is set in outer space on the surface of Mars. The double failures of a clunky old oxygen generator and an exotic but finicky gravity control pod have conspired to weaken the resolve and psychological judgment of the crew and the film's protagonist Major Syrtis. This means he has horrific hallucinations that are centered around the artificial birth of the Christmas baby. An alien super-being arrives and with his otherworldly powers fixes the oxygen generator but it's the station's genius mechanic who fixes the gravity problem."

Hey, right on!

Pitchfork.tv has the official trailer-- go watch it right now!

One note: "It is a strange experience not meant for children, but for the inner child in all of us grown-ups." How fitting.

The Lips have a new tune on the soundtrack of Okie Noodling II, and a bunch of festival appearances in Europe next month. Which is great and all, except that CHRISTMAS ON MARS IS A THING THAT MANY PEOPLE WILL SEE WITH THEIR EYES SOON. Y'all must feel about eleven months pregnant.
