Who are we?
We are 307,000 Icelanders living in the Republic of Iceland.
Our capital is Reykjavik (115,000), the world's northernmost capital.
Other towns: K�pavogur, Hafnarfj�r�ur, Akureyri.
We speak Icelandic. Icelandic has evolved very little since the 12th century and is related to the other Scandinavian languages. English is widely spoken. Learn Icelandic here.


What is our country like?

What does Iceland look like: The coastline is shaped by fjords and 52% of the land is a desert of lava and ice. Watch live web-cameras in Iceland here.
How is the weather: wet and windy. Average temperatures are 15�C for Summer and -5�C for Winter.
Our major industries are fishing, aluminium smelting, power generation, banking and tourism. Know more about our economy here.

About Icelandic history

- 10.000 Norse colons settled in Iceland between 872 and 930 AD. Know more about the Vikings here.
- The Parliament in Thingvellir is the oldest parliament of Europe.
- Leif Eriksson was the first European to sail to America in 1000 AD.
- Norway took control of the island in the 13th century and Denmark took it over in the 14th century.
- Iceland attained home rule from Denmark in 1904 and eventually gained full independence in 1944.


The Icelanders are known for...

Leifur Eir�ksson, the first European to reach America, Bj�rk and The Sugarcubes are famous for their musical talent ; Halld�r Laxness, writer and Nobel Prize.

You also know Iceland because our geysers and volcanoes. Reagan and Gorbachov met here and ended the Cold War in 1984. The Icelandic Sagas, medieval literary works which give account of Viking life and war.
