Hopes are high at Újpest FC that after almost a decade of near misses, this time they can apply the finishing touches to their Hungarian 1. Liga title challenge.

Quick starters
Újpest are renowned fast starters, galloping away from the pack only to be hauled back and overtaken on the final furlong. Runners-up in 2004 and 2006 the side were top of the table with a month to go last term, only to fall away with the end in sight, eventually limping home in fourth. Yet a new season brings fresh hope and, ten games into the campaign, Lázár Szentes's side are in impressive form.

'Great match'
With a third of the season gone Újpest are two points clear of Szentes's former club Debreceni VSC at the summit, underlining their credentials with an impressive 4-1 victory against reigning champions MTK Budapest last time out. The Purples' club's website said it all, leading with the simple headline: "We had a great match against MTK".

Rajczi buoyant
Most agreed, including striker Péter Rajczi, who has contributed three goals this term and is hopeful that his side can end an eleven-year wait for their 21st title. "We are really improving as a team and not just because we have won seven times [in ten games] but also because of how we play as a team," said the Hungary international. "We need to maintain this position and I think that ambition becomes more and more realistic as we gain confidence."
