"It's about a relationship between two women. It's not neurotic or sexually aberrant."
--Jane Fonda, October 31, 1976 in the New York Times.
Asked by interviewer Judy Klemesrud in the New York Times whether there were overtones of lesbianism in Julia, Vanessa Redgrave responded, "No, I don't think so, not at all. There is no hint of it in the way Lillian Hellman writes of their friendship. In fact, in the book where Lillian views Julia's body in the funeral parlor she says something like 'It wouldn't matter if I said I never even kissed her, so I just touched her face.'"
When a male character in the film suggests that, "everyone knows about you and Julia," Jane Fonda slugs him. Vanessa Redgrave is absolutely stunning as Julia -- and Jane Fonda as Lillian is totally crushed out on her. Similar to Diane Kurys' Entre Nous, the friendship between Fonda and Redgrave contains strong overtones of lesbianism without ever naming it.
