Jakob (Robin Williams) is a nebbishy Jew in the Polish ghetto during
World War II. He overhears a German officer's radio reporting the
approach of the Red Army, and soon becomes enmeshed in a web of lies,
semi-truths, hopes, and despair. The movie is visually impressive and
nicely performed by an excellent cast -- even Williams's twinkliness has
been reined in. And its wry Yiddish humor is pleasingly unsentimental.
The script bogs down a bit, sometimes veering between ponderous
self-importance and "Hogan's Heroes" silliness, but a ghettoful of
well-etched characters eventually carries the day.
Not a pink triangle in sight.
