Police say a downtown Wells Fargo Bank discovered a package with a threatening note at about 2:30 p.m. A nearby Vectra Bank Colorado reported a similar package minutes later.
Both banks were evacuated, along with the two-block area surrounding each bank. The evacuation area contains the offices of The Aspen Times newspaper and numerous other businesses, along with some homes.
No explosion has been reported; however, a news release from the Aspen Police Department says the packages indicated a "credible threat to the community."
The Grand Junction Bomb Squad and other agencies are assisting with the investigation.
