The Mastretta MXT is the first sportive automobile produced by the Mexican car maker Mastretta, and is notable for being both the first automobile completely produced and designed in Mexico[1], as well as the first Mexican sports car.[2] The MXT is a mid-size sports car and its production will officially begin in 2009.

[edit] Prototipo Zero

The MXT Prototipo Cero (Spanish for Prototype Zero) was actually the third automotive development by Mastretta and successor to the MXB and MXA kit-cars. The name "MXT" comes from Mastretta and Mexico as well as a reference to its Transversal engine. The Prototipo Cero was developed between 2004 and 2007, and is engineered by the Volkswagen inline-4 115 hp (86 kW) that mounted its fourth generation Jetta, which remains being sold along with the A5 in many countries, including Mexico. Increased power allowed the coupé to reach 200 km/h (124 mph). This contrasts with the top speed and performance of its predecessor the MXB, estimated 130 km/h (81 mph) using the VW flat-4 44 hp (33 kW) mounted in the ancient Beetle. Production was to begin in the first quarter of 2008.[3]

[edit] Pre-production version

In July 22, 2008, the Mastretta MXT was presented at the British International Motor Show, held in London. This is however the last pre-production prototype, so the final production version was likely to be deveiled at the Mexico International AutoShow, held in late September; due to unexplained reasons, the maker didn't show up.[4].

However, general specifications and equipment have been released. Equipment includes racing bucket seats and seatbelts, Hella xenon headlights, ABS brakes, two airbags, magnesium 17" wheels, digital board instruments, Borla exhaust and, according to main designer and engineer Daniel Mastretta, a maximum security level which is already being tested to qualify for European quality standards. Though the Prototipo Cero would originally exclude basics on many modern-day cars such as AM/FM/CD Radio or air conditioning, the pre-production version already has them, adding MP3 CD player and automatic climatization.

Its production will begin in January 2009 at Mastretta's first car factory with an annual production of 150 units. Around 70% (105 cars) will be exported to Europe and the United States, and 45 will remain for national sales.

The serial-production MXT will be powered by a Cosworth-tuned[5] 2.0 liter inline-4 with 240 hp (180 kW), supercharger and aftercooling allowing it to reach over 230 km/h (143 mph) on top speed.[6]

[edit] About its Mexican origin

One of the MXT's most notable aspects remains to be its Mexican origin; furthermore, its worldwide presentation in Europe, as if Mexican cars were being developed all the time. Daniel Mastretta comented in London:[1]

We needed to create a great car because Mexico has no tradition of sophisticated sports car manufacturing. It is most important that our customers are delighted by the new MXT. That’s what we aimed to do from the first drawing of the car, but we also want to make our country proud of the MXT and to show the world what we can do.

Prices given for the United Kingdom are £32,999 while for the United States $55,000. There is no information about the price for Mexican consumers, but it's estimated in $500,000 Mexican pesos (around $50,000 or £22,700). Sales will begin in May 2009 in the United Kingdom, with other European destinations to follow.[5] Orange and yellow MXTs are likely to be available.
