South Whittier is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California just south of the city of Whittier. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 55,193.

South Whittier is located at 33°56′5″N 118°1′51″W / 33.93472°N 118.03083°W / 33.93472; -118.03083 (33.934724, -118.030800)[1], or about two miles (3 km) southwest of Whittier. [1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²), all land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 55,193 people, 14,673 households, and 12,266 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,961.0/km² (10,257.7/mi²). There were 15,008 housing units at an average density of 1,077.1/km² (2,789.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 52.47% White, 1.47% African American, 1.23% Native American, 3.02% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 36.37% from other races, and 5.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 69.31% of the population.

There were 14,673 households out of which 48.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.4% were non-families. 12.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.74 and the average family size was 3.99.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $47,378, and the median income for a family was $49,756. Males had a median income of $32,314 versus $25,605 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,080. About 9.2% of families and 12.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.0% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature South Whittier is located in the 30th Senate District, represented by Democrat Ronald S. Calderon, and in the 56th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Tony Mendoza. Federally, South Whittier is located in California's 39th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +13[3] and is represented by Democrat Linda Sánchez.
