THE BUZZ: Jensen Ackles is finding the transition away from small screen rife with lead roles in ill-advised horror remakes -- just like his "Supernatural" co-star, Jared Padalecki, who will be seen in the upcoming Friday the 13th. Sigh. I just don't get it ... This project has enough scrappy talent to generate convincing scares, but why can't they be trusted with an original screenplay? Oh, and apparently Valentine's Day is in January this year.

Notorious

Notorious

Director: George Tillman Jr.
Stars: Jamal Woolard, Anthony Mackie, Derek Luke (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: A chronicle of Christopher Wallace's (Woolard) rise from the streets of Brooklyn to become Notorious B.I.G., one of biggest and best rappers of the 1990s, under the tutelage of mentor/producer Sean Combs (Luke)

This is the teaser trailer for Notorious, the Biggie Smalls biopic directed by George Tillman Jr.
This is some behind-the-scenes footage from Notorious, the Notorious B.I.G. biopic directed by George Tillman Jr.

THE BUZZ: Apologies to George Tillman Jr., but unless John Singleton, Albert and Allen Hughes, or another filmmaker of their caliber had signed on to develop and direct this biography, what sort of service are you paying to Biggie's legacy? Derek Luke as Puffy, Angela Bassett as Ms. Wallace, and Anthony Mackie as arch-nemesis Tupac are nice flourishes, I just wish the production hired more behind-the-camera talent, and at least considered a December release for an awards-qualifying run (they must already know the kind of film they have on their hands). Still, with all the posthumous praise, movies, Greatest Hits CDs and dorm room posters his West Coast rival rapper Tupac received, it's about time Biggie got his big screen due. That strong supporting cast helps take the weight (put not intended) off newcomer Woolard, but judging by the first teaser trailer he looks like he owns this role.

Defiance

The second trailer for this World War II drama inspired by a true story

THE BUZZ: Don't call this one an awards-season has-been just because its December wide release date was nixed by a cost-cutting Paramount; Edward Zwick's WWII drama is still buzzing (though the volume has been turned down) and has received an Oscar-qualifying run before its post-holiday push into the mainstream. However, the chance that Daniel Craig might be the first 007 to score an Oscar nod before his License to Kill has been revoked is looking increasingly faint. Still, his toughest competition may be co-stars Bell and Schreiber. As for the film itself, while a Best Picture nomination is unlikely, more importantly, it's bringing to light a significant and often overlooked historical event.

Chandni Chowk to China

Chandni Chowk to China [limited]

Director: Nikhil Advani
Stars: Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Chia Hui Liu (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: An Indian cook (Kumar) traveling across China is mistaken by villagers as the reincarnation of an ancient peasant warrior, and as he heads to their homeland for a princely reception, he learns he has been chosen to help the village fight a notorious smuggler.

An action-comedy about a simple cook from Chandni Chowk mistaken for the reincarnation of an ancient peasant warrior Liu Shengh by residents of an oppressed Chinese village.
Trailer: A comedy concerning a mistaken identity, and the first Bollywood film distributed by Warner Brothers

THE BUZZ: Every other week or so, a Bollywood film is released in the U.S. and typically these movies flirt with breakout success. As Hollywood increasingly looks for film funding abroad, it was bound to happen that a studio would target a Bollywood film for likely crossover success, and that's what Warner Bros. has done in this case. The Stephen Chow set should love this lookalike (and I mean that in a sweet, nurturing way), as should the more hardcore kung-fu heads who appreciate the work of actor Gordon Liu.

Hotel for Dogs

Hotel for Dogs

Director: Thor Freudenthal
Stars: Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: Orphaned teens Andi (Roberts) and Bruce (Austin) are sent to live with their aunt, which is just fine with the kids until they meet a stray dog who needs their help. Since their aunt is allergic to dogs, the siblings decide to turn a nearby abandoned house into a canine hostel. But can they kept their secret under wraps as more and more four-legged guests arrive?

This is the first theatrical trailer for Hotel for Dogs, directed by Thor Freudenthal.

THE BUZZ: Visual effects whiz Thor Freudenthal was set to make his directorial debut on They Came from Upstairs, but he hopped on Dogs, a project I'm hearing will have some dark shading and a PG rating. Cute kids here, an even cuter adult cast (Kudrow plays the allergic aunt) ... could Emma Roberts, whose Wild Child disappeared from the 2008/2009 calendar, have her first actual-real box-office hit?

Paul Blart: Mall Cop - Theatrical Trailer #2
Clip: A closer look
When a shopping mall is overtaken by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to the a mild-mannered security guard to save the day.

THE BUZZ: Cuddly Kevin James ventures out on his own for the first time with a leading-man project that feels like it'd be better suited for a lowered-expectations comedian like Rob Schneider. Or Dane Cook. But I guess you put a chubby guy in a rent-a-cop outfit and the jokes just write themselves. (Or perhaps not, as evidenced by this Blart-related viral video.) Meanwhile, director Steve Carr continues to gravitate away from his still-kinda-funny R-rated debut.

Gran Torino

Gran Torino

Director: Clint Eastwood
Stars: Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang (Full Cast)
Studio:

The Plot: When his prized 1972 Gran Torino nearly is stolen, disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) looks to clean up his neighborhood, which has been taken over by gangs. Reluctantly, Kowalski also forms a bond with one of his neighbors, a Hmong teenager, whose family is embroiled in a gang-related conflict.

Clip: What happened to you
Behind the scenes: "Get off my lawn"

THE BUZZ: Clint Eastwood's under-wraps project is getting a reveal at year's end, in hopes that his Detroit-set story of racism, revenge, and urban decline will result in an Eastwood-heavy Oscar field. Apple has the trailer online, and it's confirmed that Christian Bale officially has some competition in the Best Grumble category. I like that Mr. Eastwood is updating his own Dirty Harry persona (make it more age-appropriate); he also seems to be providing a societal critique that is reminiscent of 70s-era urban-panic movies. Does the trailer, however, feel a bit rushed to you -- an indication that yet another film from a notable director (think: Oliver Stone here) has been given the hurry-up treatment for potential Oscar glory? GT could be up for Best Director by default, but Best Picture?

Bride Wars

Bride Wars

Director: Gary Winick
Stars: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Candice Bergen (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox 2000 Pictures

The Plot: Two best friends (Hudson and Hathaway) become rivals when a clerical error results in their respective weddings being held at the same place ... on the same day.

User Rating: *****_____

Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, and Candice Bergen star in Bride Wars, directed by Gary Winick.
Trailer: C

THE BUZZ: Though BW is set in Boston, most of the drama is centered around Hathaway and Hudson's bridal blitz on NYC, a city that has treated Ms. Hathaway very well (Hudson, though, not so much). With this sure-fire hit and her singing-and-dancing performance in Rob Marshall's Nine, it's apparent that Hudson has her career back on track, while Hathaway can expect a busy winter promoting this movie, and perhaps enjoying an Oscar nomination for Rachel Getting Married; however, look for Candice Bergen's wedding planner to make like Miranda Priestly and truly run the events.

The Plot: Haunted by strange dreams and recurring ghostly visions, Casey Beldon (Yustman) turns to a spiritual advisor (Oldman) for help. This is the first theatrical trailer for The Unborn, directed by David Goyer.
Sometimes a soul is so evil that it is denied access to heaven, forcing it to wander the world searching for a body to inhabit. Sometimes, it succeeds.

THE BUZZ: After you watch The Unborn's trailer, perhaps you can ask yourself the following question: Is David Goyer a better screenwriter (The Dark Knight, Dark City) than director (The Invisible, Blade: Trinity)? I don't mean any aggressive disrespect, but I fail to see one shred of ingenuity in this preview, though I say the sight of a possessed Idris Elba makes him a good pick for a potential Nick Fury, should that role, uh, come to term. All that said, I must remember there's a generation or two behind me that's probably never seen The Exorcist, so here's hoping Goyer pushes beyond the usual genre devices and helps Cloverfield's Odette Yustman get her Linda Blair on. The power of Goyer compels me!

A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.

THE BUZZ: There must be some kind of rule in Hollywood about when a big-time star decides to make a dog movie. We're guessing for Aniston and Wilson, it's when they're done working with Ben Stiller.

Message Boards: This basically sums the movie up.  |  What's the best breed of dog in your opinion?

Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.

THE BUZZ: Now that Ben B's release date has come, the question on our minds will soon be answered: Will this F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation become the film of the year, or yet another holiday gift that fails to connect with mainstream audiences? We're of course hoping that the former case wins out, and given the advanced word-of-mouth the film has enjoyed, we don't predict that crowds will feel alienated by David Fincher's latest collaboration with Brad Pitt. Put another way: Any movie that plots to pair you with Cate Blanchett toward the end of your life is A-OK with me.

THE BUZZ: Softly doth Adam Sandler step into family-friendly territory under the chopless direction of Adam Shankman. Do you think Disney knew ahead of time what they were getting into when they cast Russell Brand (AKA the UK's Tom Green) (who somehow got a part in Julie Taymor's new project) as a room-service waiter? Do you think that Jim Carrey and Will Smith will be really PO'ed on Christmas Day when Adam Sandler literally and figuratively out-grosses them both?

Valkyrie

Stars: Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Carice van Houten (Full Cast)

Valkyrie: Featurette -- "Through Bryan Singer's Eyes"

Valkyrie: "The Resistance"

THE BUZZ: With each release-date change, our interest in Valkyrie only increases. Will it become known as the title that topples the dissolved United Artists partnership between Tom Cruise and longtime producing partner Paula Wagner, or will it mark the successful reunion of director Bryan Singer and Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie, who haven't worked together since they made one another famous? With the movie's action/thriller angle slickly ratcheted up, we expect it to combat everything working against its potential success: myriad production woes (including a late-stage shooting delay that caused the release date to be pushed back from the July 4th holiday); the public's disinterest in T.C.; said public's recent indifference to war movies; holiday competition. Still, the look is right, insiders seem to want it to succeed, and T.C. is enjoying an Oscar push for his Tropic Thunder cameo; if the creative team here reaches its zenith, this is exactly the sort of fare that will get adults into the multiplex during the holidays.

Seven Pounds Theatrical Trailer
Clip: I need a favor
Behind the scenes: Woody plays piano

THE BUZZ: Prepare to feel depressed, then uplifted, for a second time by Will Smith and his Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino. Just like in Hancock, a hidden story angle that will reveal itself in time; equally concealed -- make that non-existent -- are any early-bird nominations for Smith's performance, which has been tipped for his third Best-Actor nomination.

There must have been tremendous pressure on greenish screenwriter Grant Nieporte to deliver, and I've seen plenty of support for his script. I thought Happyness' screenplay was wispy, but that didn't prevent it from international success, so I have to surmise that Smith's bulletproof career is in no danger of taking a dent this holiday season, even if he made a few enemies in LA this time around.
