Tony Chiles
Assistant Basketball Coach

Tony Chiles is entering his fifth season as a member of the basketball staff. Chiles will once again work with the Drexel guards on the court and will focus on recruiting off the court. He will also work on individual player development. Chiles arrived at Drexel after working at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., for six seasons.

Chiles worked as an assistant under former NBA All-Star Jeff Ruland. During his time at Iona, he served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and was responsible for signing a number of prominent players from New York City. Chiles also worked with the Iona. The Gaels went to two NCAA Tournaments with Chiles on the staff and won two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

Prior to his appointment at Iona, Chiles was an assistant coach at Manhattan. He assisted with recruiting, was the team’s academic advisor was responsible for recruiting, individual instruction, on-floor coaching and preseason conditioning. Chiles also served as the acting head coach after the departure of Fran Fraschilla and before the arrival of John Leonard. Chiles served as the head coach of the junior varsity team at All Hallows High School, in his hometown. He was a member of the All Hallows faculty and taught mathematics and global studies.

A 1989 graduate of Columbia University, Chiles earned a degree in political science. He was a two-time member of Columbia’s Dean’s Lists. Chiles was a four-year letterwinner and started at point guard for three seasons. Chiles still holds the school’s single-game assist record with 18 against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and is second on Columbia’s all-time assist list with 323. He played his high school ball at All Hallows and led his team to the New York City and New York State Championships in 1985 and was the valedictorian of his senior class.

Chiles and his wife, MáCheré, live in Philadelphia. He has two sons, Tony, Jr., 18, and six-year old Taj.
