The main objective of Prey the Stars is to eat everything in sight and to attack your opponents. Each of the games colorfully-themed stages are cleared by devouring as much as possible before time runs out. The player with the highest score at the end of the stage is the winner. Each player scores points by eating and by sucking in "spirits" which are hidden in some objects. The bigger the item, the higher the score. Prey the Stars offers a delicious smorgasbord of multiplayer options. Gamers can feast with up to 4 friends using local Wireless DS Single-Card Download Play or Multi-Card Play. Players can also take their gastronomic conquest worldwide with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Exclusive character designs for Prey the Stars were created by break-out Japanese pop artist TOUMA. The highly-respected designer is renowned for his whimsical and edgy creations including, Knuckle Bear and Boo, that have taken the urban vinyl toy industry by storm. [Koei]

WonderwallWeb
This is a very original puzzle action game, controls are a bit too complicated to be a classic but it is fun enough to pass the time.

Worth Playing
It's a cute, quirky little game that is solid in every respect but doesn't particularly wow you in any sense.

NGamer UK
An unusual action game with hidden depths that comes into its own in multiplayer. A bit too self-consciously 'kooky', mind. [Nov 2008, p.66]

Cheat Code Central
Overall, it offers a fun and rewarding experience, but unfortunately, it's not quite as entertaining and addictive as it could have been.

Jolt Online Gaming UK
Prey the Stars is still an imaginative, good looking game that can be enjoyable in short bursts. Single card multiplayer is a definite highlight, online play not so much.

Prey the Stars: Gabu Gabu Planet is a great platforming game that is simple to pick up, looks great and plays well. It does feel a little repetitive after lengthy play, but with online options and multiplayer options the game can be picked up at any time for a quick laugh.

DarkZero
This game isn’t fantastic, but certainly will hold your attention for a while, through a mixture of compulsive gameplay, and energetic atmosphere brought on by the games fantastically manic tunes. You can’t go far wrong if you fancy a multiplayer game.

GameZone
Prey the Stars is a case of all sizzle, no steak; that is, underneath the cute, quirky premise and presentation, it simply doesn’t have gameplay that’s compelling enough to keep you interested.

1UP
Prey the Stars looks cute, but it isn't a cakewalk. Balancing the rhythm and the type of food you eat can be overwhelming, and with so many wild-card moments, frustration can trump fun. In multiplayer, though, Stars begins to shine as its complexity emerges in an engaging and extremely competitive game.

Nintendo Power
Prey the Stars is like a baloon--it gets bigger and better until it pops and becomes useless. [Nov 2008, p.106]

EuroGamer
Visuals aside, the game ultimately gets too repetitive too soon. It claws back some respect by providing additional challenges for each map and offering different characters with slightly different abilities for replay value, but the mechanics never really change enough to capture your interest for long.

The fact is there's nothing really here. The gameplay is too repetitive, the slow variation in what's asked of you is as minimal as it is uninteresting - you're asked to mix up the order of certain buttons are pressed in order to further progress your character's ability and score, but it simply begs the question...why? When I could be playing anything else, why would I bother with Prey the Stars?
