Richie Havens kicks off major US jaunt
Folk icon Richie Havens is greeting the New Year with an extensive tour itinerary that stretches into next summer.
The singer/guitarist kicks things off this weekend in California and bounces all over the US through early June. Nearly a dozen shows on the trek are performances with multi-instrumentalist Harry Manx, who fuses folk and blues with classic Indian ragas. Havens' current itinerary is listed below, and updates can be found at his website as shows continue to trickle in.
The soulful folk-rocker is supporting his 30th album, "Nobody Left to Crown," which surfaced last summer on Verve Records. The set features originals and interpretations of songs by acts including The Who, Jackson Browne and Peter Yarrow. It is the latest offering in what Havens considers a continuous journey that advances with each record.
"My albums are meant to be a chronological view of the times we've come through, what we've thought about, and what we've done to grow and change," the performer explained in his bio. "There's a universal point to which we all respond, and where all songs apply to everyone."
"Nobody Left to Crown" follows 2004's self-produced "Grace of the Sun," which is another mixed bag of originals and covers.
Havens emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early '60s and went on to electrify the 1969 Woodstock festival with a set that spanned nearly three hours due to repeated encores. He came full circle at the 30th Woodstock anniversary celebration in 1999.
