There's nothing new about the idea of people coming from abroad to live and work in Britain. It's been going on for hundreds, even thousands, of years. Almost everyone in Britain today is either an immigrant, or descended from immigrants.
In this section of the website, we look at the long history of migration in Britain, and explore some of the many different reasons why people have chosen to make it their home. We examine how aspects of our daily lives - from the beliefs and values we hold, the languages we speak and even the food we eat - make us different, and similar, to others.
We will also talk here about integration - something that not only lies at the heart of the CRE's work, but has in recent times become a hotly-debated issue. In these pages, you can find out more about the our vision of a fair and integrated Britain, and what we are doing to help make it a reality.
Use our interactive map to find out who lives where in Britain, and learn more about people's ethnic backgrounds, their culture and their beliefs.
Our timeline charts the significant changes in the make-up of Britain's population over the years - from 10,000BC right up to the present day.
We explain these concepts, and describe how we are working with individuals, organisations and government to help create an integrated Britain.
What do we mean by 'culture'? Is 'race' the same as 'ethnicity'? What's the difference between an 'asylum seeker and a 'refugee'? Find out with our series of mini-essays.
