The CRE today announced its decision to fund more local race equality organisations than ever before to the tune of £4.2 million - a 20 percent increase on recent years. Through its Getting Results funding programme, 127 local groups will be awarded money to build good race relations and integration and tackle discrimination in their areas. For the first time, the CRE has also given small grants to 41 organisations for an additional £250,000. This money has been awarded to help small organisations become more effective at delivering local race equality work and to deliver small one-off projects to ensure greater interaction between different communities through activities like sport, art and music. Trevor Phillips, CRE Chair said: CRE funding through Getting Results is a crucial part of our integration agenda. Ensuring greater interaction among different communities is the hardest challenge with the most urgent need. We have spoken about the way our communities are drifting apart and this funding is part of the practical action to reverse this trend. This year we received bids totalling £14.3 million with only £4.2 million to go around. Recent events have put our local partners on the front line, calming and reconciling fractured communities. We want to ensure that the invaluable work we have invested in over the past 30 years, continues.

They form an independent network working in local areas to promote racial equality and tackle racial discrimination.
- Getting Results is the CRE's funding framework and was launched in 2003. Its priority areas for 2006/7 are inter-community conflict prevention and resolution and support for victims of racial discrimination and harassment including casework.
- More about Getting Results
- The CRE is recommending that a new body be formed, to lead on community relations, extremism, migration and citizenship issues.
- A new body for community relations
About the CRE- The Race Relations Act 1976 makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone on grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins. The Commission for Racial Equality was established under the Act to work for the elimination of discrimination, the promotion of equality of opportunity and good race relations generally.
- The CRE can advise or assist people with cases before courts and employment tribunals and can conduct its own investigations when it has grounds to believe discrimination may be taking place.
- Public bodies have a duty to eliminate discrimination in the way they work and to promote equality of opportunity and good race relations. The Commission is working to help them deliver this duty.
