The U.S. air travel system is stymied by a 50-year-old air control system, which is in need of an upgrade that alone could cost more than $50 billion, according to the FAA. U.S. railways aren't much better off, as federal estimates for a nationwide safety upgrade are at $2.3 billion or more.
