The 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster is proof that U.S. dams and levees must routinely be inspected and maintained for safety, as billions of dollars of property and, more importantly, many lives are vulnerable if one fails. Many of the nation's current dams and levees are decades old and in dire need of repair, but funds are lacking.
