The Moon as seen by an observer from Earth

The Moon is Earth's only permanent natural satellite and the fifth largest moon in the Solar System. The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 kilometres (238,857 miles). The gravitational pull at its surface is about a sixth of Earth's. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days, and the periodic variations in the geometry of the Earth–Moon–Sun system are responsible for the lunar phases that repeat every 29.5 days. The gravitational, centripetal forces generated by the rotation of the Moon and Earth around a common axis, the barycentre, are largely responsible for the tides on Earth. The Moon is the only celestial body that humans have traveled to and landed on. The first artificial object to escape Earth's gravity and pass near the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 1, the first artificial object to impact the lunar surface was Luna 2, and the first photographs of the normally occluded far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3, all in 1959. The U.S. Apollo program has achieved the first (and only) manned missions to date, resulting in six landings between 1969 and 1972. Human exploration of the Moon ceased with the conclusion of the Apollo program, although as of 2007, several countries have announced plans to send either people or robotic spacecraft to the Moon. On 4 December 2006, NASA outlined plans for a permanent base on the Moon as part of preparation for a voyage to Mars. (more...)

Bouncing ball

A bouncing ball captured with a stroboscopic flash. As the ball falls freely under the influence of gravity, it accelerates downward, its initial potential energy converting into kinetic energy. On impact with a hard surface the ball deforms, converting the kinetic energy into elastic potential energy. Each impact of the ball is a partially inelastic collision, meaning that energy is lost at each bounce.

Featured list: List of Colorado Avalanche players

Long-time captain Joe Sakic stands beside Paul Stastny before a game.

The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado, United States. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche arrived in Denver in 1995 after playing since 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques. Since their arrival, over 150 players have played at least one NHL game for the Avalanche.[1] Forty-one of those players have won a Stanley Cup championship with the Avalanche. Six of those players—Adam Foote, Peter Forsberg, Jon Klemm, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic and Stephane Yelle—were members of both Cup-winning teams in 1996 and 2001.[2] Joe Sakic is the franchise leader in goals, assists and points. He is the only player to have served as the captain of the team in Colorado, though he is the eighth player in franchise history to do so.[3]

Two former players have had their number retired by the Avalanche. Ray Bourque's #77 was retired in 2001,[4] and Patrick Roy's #33 was retired in 2003.[5] Three players have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame: Jari Kurri, Ray Bourque and Patrick Roy.[6] Kurri and Bourque played only the final season of their careers in Colorado, while Roy arrived in the team's first season in Denver, remaining with the Avalanche until his retirement in 2003 as the NHL's all-time wins leader.[7]

This list does not include data from the Quebec Nordiques. The seasons column lists the first year of the season of the player's first game and the last year of the season of the player's last game. For example, a player who played one game in the 2000–01 season would be listed as playing with the team from 2000–01, regardless of what calendar year the game occurred within.

Statistics are complete to the end of the 2007–08 NHL season.

Goaltenders

Patrick Roy, goalie for the Avalanche between 1995 and 2003, won two Stanley Cups with the team.
