The Department of Conservation and Collections Management is an integral part of the Museum’s stated purpose to hold its collections in trust for future generations.

Members of the Department support the Museum’s goals through research, collections care, development of conservation treatments and the study of materials, techniques, and scholarly research to further the understanding of the artist’s original intent. Scientific research provides analytical and technical studies, supporting conservation practice and furthering knowledge of the Museum’s holdings. These activities contribute both to scholarly understanding and to public appreciation of the collections.

The Department is committed to public outreach, education and training in the fields of collections management, conservation, and conservation science. It encourages professional development and training for its staff. Through research, professional publications, presentations and educational programs for the public, the Department of Conservation and Collections Management contributes to the ongoing development of the professions represented by its staff.
The Labs
The Department promotes the long-term preservation of the works of art in its care through six conservation disciplines and an analytical facility. Following internationally established standards for safe exhibition, storage and transport, staff members strive for the highest quality in their work and documentation. Through treatment, the conservators maintain the aesthetic and physical integrity of works of art, upholding the ethics of the profession.
