R.I.P. Frank Navetta, Founding Descendents Guitarist

Frank Navetta, original guitarist for SoCal brat-punk icons the Descendents, has died, according to an announcement on the Descendents website. Navetta formed the group in 1978 with bassist Tony Lombardo and drummer Bill Stevenson, issuing a single for "Ride the Wild" as a trio before introducing singer Milo Aukerman into the mix. Navetta played on the band's debut EP Fat, their must-have debut LP Milo Goes to College, and a few tracks on 1985's I Don't Want to Grow Up. Around this time, Navetta split with the group, moved to Oregon and, according to the Descendents' website, "burned all his equipment." Navetta also played on the band's 1996 effort Everything Sucks, and joined the band onstage at Fort Collins, Colorodo's Stockage Festival in 2002.

Navetta passed away Friday, October 31 following a brief illness. The statement on the band's website says, "This is obviously a huge loss for the DESCENDENTS family. His contribution to the band, and to music in general can not be overstated. Frank will be truly missed."
