Makin' Movies with Interpol!
Advance may not cover Marlon Brando

It's been a long time since we've heard anything new from the monochromatic gentlemen of Interpol. Sure, they'll be hitting up the mega-goth Curiosa tour this summer (and presumably playing new songs), but where's the album already? Those goddamn bright lights are dimming! Does anyone have a flashlight?

Matador Records does: They're stepping up to give Interphiles something to distract themselves with during the wait-- a new contest which challenges fans to create a film about the band. Now, don't get crazy on us. Remember: Art is hard. (That's why we're writers.) But Matador is hoping you'll keep an optimistic, open mind, anyway. And here's why: The label intends to celebrate Interpol's upcoming sophomore release by selecting ten treatments (that's Hollywood-speak for "idea you wrote down") which will then each receive a budget to produce a short film "inspired by the music and aesthetic of the band."

The submissions are due by July 5th, which should provide plenty of time for the filmmakers/waiters in question to whip something together. Interpol themselves will judge the entries-- though if any of them are plagiarized from a major motion picture, the creators will presumably be subject to a five-figure fine and/or a severe flogging. Those selected will be handed a cool grand to make their movies, plus a minute's worth of new material from the upcoming album as the soundtrack.

In other actual Interpol music news, a couple more song titles have been added to the tracklist of the band's forthcoming second album, which is presently tentatively slated for a fall release. Everyone already knows about "NARC" and "Length of Love", but how does "Not Even Jail" sound? "Evil"? "Rod Laver"? Sure, they ain't no "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down", but then, they ain't no "Untitled" neither. Of course, the songs in question have yet to be recorded, which does pose a challenge to actually releasing an album, but apparently recording is an afterthought in the world of Interpol. Flash those double-breasted Armanis again, guys!
