Voters in Kent overwhelmingly chose to retain five City Council members in a recall election on January 13, 2009.[1]
The recall effort was defeated by large margins, for most members at least a 2-1 ratio.[1]
Many say the recall grew from frustration with a new tax increase and a tax credit reduction. The petition charged that the council members "acted on behalf of their own interest and neglected the very basic concerns of the city's infrastructure and financial well-being."[1]
The council members in the recall Jack Amrhein, D-2; Rick Hawksley, D-at-large, on the council since January 2002; Michael DeLeone, D-at-large, on council since January 1998; Heidi Shaffer, D-5, and Tracy Wallach, D-6. Amrhein, Shaffer and Wallach have been on council since 2008 January.[1]
