The Pitchfork Guide to Musicians on Twitter
Twitter: everyone's on it. Or so it seems. But while we can only read so many "it's fucking cold in NYC!!!" posts from (let's say) acquaintances, there's something magic about musicians we like documenting their every move in bite-sized, er, Tweets.
And, thanks to modern culture's obsession with over-sharing, more and more bands are signing up. Thanks to some recent Pitchfork stories, we already know about the Twitter accounts of Coldplay, Sonic Youth, and Erykah Badu. And now a resourceful person named Gabriel Nijmeh is keeping a database of artists who Twitter (Via the Daily Swarm), so we decided to check in with a few Pitchfork-friendly acts and see if their micro-blog life is worth seconds of our time each day...
Lily Allen
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "about to learn sexual etiquette, finally [...] once ive got this cock out my mouth"
Worth Following? Absolutely; Lily Allen may have invented Twitter.
Ghostface Killah
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Um, no.
Sample Tweet: "Make sure you cop GhostDeini The Great this Tuesday December 16!!"
Worth Following? We wish.
The Long Winters (John Roderick)
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "It's not that I don't want to hang out with you because I'm some 'big-shot rock star'. It's because I'm a guy who likes to have a good time."
Worth Following? Yes, especially if you're one of Roderick's exes.
Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor)
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "Aside from rehearsing, I'm up to something cool I'll tell you about soon. Nope - not telling yet."
Worth Following? If you're into cryptic hints and clues about projects that may or may not actually exist.
Bjork
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Unfortunately, no.
Sample Tweet: "Chat soon @OpenDictator, @frodegb, @edial, @1root, @bertiedav, @davidtapia, @cristianoww, @sportdilla7."
Worth Following? Only if you want a generic "welcome" message from Bjork's personal bot.
Jay Reatard
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "at the airport . People stink like french frys and butthole"
Worth Following? Clearly, yes.
Common

Sample Tweet: "still needs to learn how to use twitter...so be patient and check out thinkcommon.com till then"
Worth Following? Com may be too old to figure this shit out.
AC/DC
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Not a chance.
Sample Tweet: "January 19,1985 AC/DC headline two of the ten nights at the Rock In Rio festival in front of a crowd of 250,000.Other acts at the festival..."
Worth Following? As you'd expect, AC/DC's management do not understand the purpose of Twitter to an almost absurd degree.
Nick Cave
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Ha, no.
Sample Twit: "Had the dream again. The dream where Viviane appears in a raging storm and cuts off my mustache."
Worth Following? Undoubtedly fake and undoubtedly better than pretty much every real Twitter on the Internet.
Grizzly Bear (Ed Droste)
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "Just watched the BEST episode of 'Big Love' EVER. Kinda wish I could be an extra or some random 'gay' mormon character on that show"
Worth Following? Honest, warm, witty-- Droste offers a nice mix of pop culture nonsense, music stuff and Brooklyn food recommendations.
The Decemberists (Colin Meloy)
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "interesting: two iconic, gravelly voiced women artists have covered our music. what's the connection?"
Worth Following? Tough for us to not read each post in Meloy's super-nerd singing voice. A deal breaker.
?uestlove
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "sign o the times: a woman in burbury goloshes asked me for some spare change."
Worth Following? Yes, if only to see him interact with other famous people via re: Tweets.

Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yeah, it's him.

Worth Following? Pause.
Q-Tip
Does it seem like the actual artist updates it? Yes.
Sample Tweet: "nite twiddies" and "Morning twiddies"
Worth Following? We just can't ride for anything involving the word "twiddies"-- a line must be drawn.
