"Lights Go Down" [MP3/Stream]

New Music: Telepathe: "Lights Go Down" [MP3/Stream]

Are Telepathe human? Or are they dancer? The Brooklyn duo refine their hybrid of gorgeously haunted dream-pop and beat-heavy UFO trunk-rattlers with "Lights Go Down", from their upcoming debut full-length, Dance Mother. "The killers!" Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudis intone hypnotically. And, emphasizing the final "t" like a slow-mo Mark E. Smith... thuhh: "The hunt!"

The big selling point on this album for many people will be the production by TV on the Radio's David Sitek, who's on kind of a winning streak lately. Sure enough, the track sounds shiny and ominous, not that far from Telepathe's own remix of Dear Science's "Crying"; dig the bleakly sensuous synths, and the bassy, Eastern-tinged rhythms someone should totally rap over. Still, I'm not hearing quite the emotional heft or the glistening atmospherics that Nicolas Vernhes got out of Telepathe on the Living Bridge compilation's "I Can't Stand It". C'mon, you guys: Brooklyn hotshot producer rivalry! (Note: This song was initially posted with the incorrect title.)
