Ian Svenonius' Scene Creamers Tour the U.S.
Catherine Lewis and Marc Masters report:
Washington, D.C.'s top driver, Ian Svenonius, is set to show off his new hot rod at our nation's finest auto
shows this March and April. Svenonius's latest vehicle, The Scene Creamers, have just released their first
spinning platter of 70s-fueled smoke, I Suck on That Emotion, via Drag City. Expect the Creamers to
carve grooves into ears and curl spines into curves on a nightly basis.
Svenonius, previously seen behind the wheel of D.C.'s legendary punk-prophets The Nation of Ulysses, equally legendary soul-preachers The Make-Up (who, by the way, are still owed style-royalties from The Hives and The [International] Noise Conspiracy), and the not-legendary-even-a-little Weird War, has brought along ex-Make-Up and Weird War compatriot Michelle Mae, along with ex-Golden guitarist Alex Minoff and drummer Blake Brunner, to form this crazy new band.
The Scene Creamers stomp on some similar aural grass as The Make-Up, but with less James Brown-styled gospelizing and more psychedelic guitar wrangling. As Svenonius told The Stranger last fall, "The Make-Up's form of presentation was getting redundant because it was getting copied too much. It needed changing or stopping, so we stopped!" Hate to say he told you so!
The band's tour officially kicks off February 28th in Charlottesville, VA, and includes two dates with Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. A sneak preview is available this Saturday, however, when Svenonius and crew open for the legendary Suicide in D.C. Tour dates:
