The Most Bizarre Grammy Rumor You'll Hear All Week
Hang with us for a second: TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek turns up in a recent "day in the life" YouTube video featuring up-and-coming D.C. rapper Wale. The two are working together, and that's cool (read more about the collaboration here). But Sitek also makes a passing remark that caught our attention: After bitching about TVOTR's Grammy snub, he quips, "Lee 'Scratch' Perry wants me and Kyp [Malone] to play in his band at the Grammys. I was like, [sarcastically] 'Oh yeah! OK!'"
Did Perry high-dial Sitek by mistake? Even though Sitek seems to be making fun of the call in this video, is there any truth to this insane Lee Perry Grammy performance possibility?
Well, maybe. But it gets even stranger. Along with Sitek and Malone, a source tells us Perry is trying to snag Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale, some of the guys from Vampire Weekend and Andrew W.K. to back him at this year's Grammys. Perry is in fact nominated for Best Reggae Album for Repentance, which was produced by Andrew W.K. and features Chippendale . Plus, based on this Pitchfork.tv in the studio piece, we know Perry and W.K. are buddies.
Vampire Weekend's publicist says the band isn't involved, and the Grammy people say they have no idea what we're talking about. But still, this rumor tells us one of two things: this will the zaniest Grammys of the modern era, or Lee Perry just purchased a new zero gravity bong.
