Age of Empires: Mythologies is inspired by the Windows PC series Age of Empires and built on the Age of Empires: Age of Kings' game engine. Featuring three playable civilizations with individual campaigns - the Egyptians, Greeks and the Norse - Age of Empires: Mythologies allows players to lead mighty heroes and legendary monsters, call down divine powers of the gods, and change the tide of battle with an all-new active combat system. Age of Empires: Mythologies also offers an immersive multiplayer experience with unique maps, customizable rules, a new skirmish mode and single-cart game sharing, allowing players anywhere to go head-to-head worldwide. Mythologies is also a very sizeable package, offering over 20 hours of play with just the single-player campaigns, and the multiplayer component is a well thought out addition players can break out whenever the mood strikes.

Between single and multiplayer modes, this is a game that you can play for a hundred hours in its first year, and then come back to time and again in the future. I just wish there was a bit more depth outside of combat. The technical execution is flawless!

When you’ve gotten your fill of saving our world and all those fictional ones in this season’s blockbusters, find some time to wield the powers of ancient gods in this tiny title that packs big, addictive fun.

IGN
A game that rivals that of Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, and Disgaea. Age of Empires has returned to DS, and with it comes more units, more strategy, just as strong of an economy system, and even more to explore within the package.

A mix of real-time and turn-based conventions makes Age of Empires: Mythologies an addictive venture into the ancient world.

The game's unique rewards system with unlockable maps, heroes, and relic powers adds replay value to a solid, if not earth-shattering strategy title. [Feb 2009, p.87]

Vandal Online
The good use of the console potential in control and interface design, and the number of levels and game modes -multiplayer being especially remarkable- assure lots of hours of gameplay to strategy genre fans.

The first Age of Empires on the DS was a near miss. A good game sunk by a flawed visual interface. The developers of Mythologies clearly did their homework. This is a solid strategy game with the visual chops to back up a deep, playable design.

This is a great strategy game for the DS, and one that strategy fans won’t want to miss.

Meristation
Age of Empires: Mythologies is based in the same great game design used in its prequel, Age of Kings. The game has been expanded with more units and options like the new god powers. And if you get tired of the very long campaign, which can last more than 20 hours, you can compete using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and the added multiplayer mode. One of the best strategy games for Nintendo DS.

While not totally divine, Age of Empires: Mythologies offers solid turn-based strategy with a wealth of options and online multiplayer.

A breeze to play on DS. [Mar 2009, p.82]

Epic missions will take a lot of train journeys to finish, but this comes recommended for players who know what they're doing and can tame the irritating controls. [Mar 2009, p.66]

A solid, deep game it gets a lot of things right and is such an improvement over its predecessor it is an ideal pick for gamers looking to try the series - and a must have for gamers disillusioned with the last iteration's meager graphical effort.

A solid tactics title, and while it follows the beaten path, at least it takes you along the scenic route.

Mastering the logistical side of things offers plenty of rewards for thoughtful players, and there's nothing like clearing the map with the blades of your wolf-riding Valkyrie hordes. [Holiday 2008, p.84]

That being said, if you haven't yet played an Age of Empires title on the DS, Mythologies is without question the most competent turn-based strategy game available for the console, and if you're a fan of mythology, all the better.

Boomtown
If your emphasis is purely on strategic and tactical gameplay, AoE is unlikely to disappointment. It may lack soul and charm, but AoE has that essential ‘just one more turn before bedtime’ appeal to it. If however you want a more rounded package, something that has charm in addition to gameplay, and one that is likely to live long in the memory afterwards, there are many better suited titles to choose from.

It's got more in common with Advance Wars, but this is still a great strategy game – real-time or not.

The gameplay gets a little too frustrating, the graphics too soulless, and the story too weak to keep us going in for too long.
