Ah, Memorial Day weekend. It's a time to fire up the grill, crack open a few cold ones, put Astral Weeks on repeat, hit the softball diamond, and start wearing white (not necessarily in that order). But if in the midst of this weekend's relaxation, you find yourself longing to be out in an open field somewhere, surrounded by thousands of your closest friends, watching bands play at extremely loud volumes, then keep this page bookmarked for your convenience. It's Pitchfork's guide to the 2008 summer festival season!

After the jump, you'll find a chronological list of the many, many, many musical gatherings taking place all over the world between now and September (plus one in October and one in November-- hey, why not?). From massive invasions of farmland in the middle of nowhere to collections of shows in grimy city clubs, there's something for everyone.

Of course, we personally consider the highlight of the season to be our own Pitchfork Music Festival, which takes place July 18-20 in Chicago's Union Park. It's less than two months away, and tickets are going fast. Get excited, people!
