Johnson County tax increase vote slated

Johnson County, Iowa, voters will decide Nov. 4 whether property owners should spend $20 million on land preservation. The issue has been discussed since January, and on Thursday the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the ballot language and put the issue before voters in November. If approved, $20 million in bonds would be used to buy undeveloped land for parks, wetlands and conservation areas. Iowa and direct democracy

Statewide, Iowa enjoys just one of the available seven forms of direct democracy. If the Iowa legislature places a constitutional amendment on the statewide ballot, voters can ratify or reject it.

The State of Iowa is in the midwestern region of the United States of America. It is the 29th state of the United States, having joined the Union on December 28, 1846. The state is named for the Native American Ioway people. It is known as the "Hawkeye State" or the "Tall Corn State".
