Here in the throes of mid-summer, the last thing we need is more heat, but the fifth annual Athens Popfest will give us just that as it descends on various venues across the college town music mecca August 12-16. And shucks, who are we to complain?

As usual, the hometown Elephant 6 orbit will provide a fair portion of said heat, with this year's fest featuring performances from Circulatory System, Elf Power, the Music Tapes, Great Lakes, and Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. Other fine folks keeping the mercury on the rise: Roky Erickson & the Explosives, Cryptacize, Boyracer, Dark Meat, Bunnygrunt, Apes, We Versus the Shark, Casper and the Cookies, the Coathangers, the Selmanaires, the Secret History, Ruby Isle, the Faintest Ideas, My Teenage Stride, and an unholy host of others.
