TVOTR, Gang Gang Dance Members Team for Benefit

Seriously guys, you can TiVo the Olympics tonight. They'll still be there when you get back. Because for one night only, August 18, at Santos' Party House in New York City, a coterie of some very fine musicians will gather for a benefit show called "Laventille Bus: A Benefit Concert for Trinidad's Children". It's in support of SFOTE's Laventille Bus project.

Heading the lineup is Simply Fly, a bona fide Brooklyn supergroup featuring TV on the Radio member/movie star Tunde Adebimpe, Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance, and Ryan Sawyer of Tall Firs and Stars Like Fleas. Until this past weekend, TV on the Radio themselves were supposed to headline the show, but "unforseen scheduling and logistical issues" forced them to alter their plans, according to a press release.)

Also performing at the benefit are Dragons of Zynth, Kaneng Lolang, and Brooklyn Jumbies, who are a "stilt dancing/fire breathing/traditional African drum and dance troupe," according to a press release. After playing their own sets, Simply Fly and Dragons of Zynth will join with Brooklyn Jumbies for a massive collaborative set. When the bands are done, a dance party will commence, featuring DJ sets from Adebimpe and others. So if you're planning to call off work tomorrow, you might want to start affecting a cough now to curb suspicion.

All profits for the show will go to addressing a rather serious problem in Laventille, Trinidad. Though the city provides free education for children, there's no public transportation system. Thus, many kids can't afford the fare to get to school, and end up dropping out. The Laventille Bus project is seeking funds to help the city build a better solution.
