Deerhunter, Mastodon, Ted Leo Celebrate Chunklet

With a little help from Fiona Apple and Zach Galifianakis
Deerhunter, Mastodon, Ted Leo Celebrate Chunklet

Athens, Georgia zine fixture Chunklet will celebrate its 15th anniversary this fall, and they've got quite a few goodies and events going on to mark the occasion.

The Chunklet Magazine 15th Anniversary Shindig Extravaganza Event will take place at Athens' 40 Watt Club on October 10 and 11. The first night will feature sets from Deerhunter, Twin Tigers, Gentleman Jesse & His Men, and comedian Brent Weinbach, and the next night's bill consists of Mastodon, It's Casual, and comedian Brian Posehn.

Since Chunklet is, after all, in the publishing business, its anniversary will also be marked by the appearance of two publications: the magazine's 20th issue and a book by publisher Henry Owings called The Rock Bible: Unholy Scripture for Fans & Bands.

Chunklet 20 ships on or around September 20. The issue includes interviews with Paul F. Tomkins, Zach Galifianakis, Jon Glaser, and the people behind the Sublime Frequencies label, plus stories about playing the glorious game of Whirlyball with the Arcade Fire, the Shins, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Lips, and Deerhunter.

The Rock Bible follows via Quirk Books in October. The book is an irreverent look at music and the people who love and make it, containing oodles of rock-related histories, parables, and commandments (e.g. "A 'sellout' is someone making more money than you," and "Whatever you call what you're playing, it's neither jazz nor core."). In addition to Owings, the long list of contributors to The Rock Bible includes Ben Gibbard, John Darnielle, Henry Rollins, Patton Oswalt, Syd Butler, Patterson Hood, Eugene Mirman, Brian Teasley, and Andrew Earles.

Finally, Chunklet has another goodie on the way: a Zach Galifianakis/Ted Leo split 7" coming out in late September. Leo's contribution is a tune with the Pharmacists called "Rock'n'Roll Dreams'll Come Through", originally recorded for WFMU. For his side, Galifianakis got Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, and comedian A.D. Miles to help him record an "ultra-danceable track" (per Chunklet's description) called "Up in Them Guts". Sounds wonderful.
