Luaka Bop Inaugurates "Three Inches of Music" Series
There's a whole big world full of music out there, so thank goodness for David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, which has spent a good 20 years now bringing us some of that world's (and particularly Brazil's) more interesting sonic fare. The NYC-based imprint will continue its globe-trotting goodwill mission with a newly-inaugurated series called "Three Inches of Music".
October 14 will see the release of the first three volumes in the series, serving to most listeners as an introduction to three acts who will issue full-length albums via Luaka Bop next year.
Marcio Local hails from Brazil, and has been winning ladies and men alike over with his soulful approach to samba. His "Three Inches" offering was recorded by the man they call Mario Caldato Jr. (The Beastie Boys, Seu Jorge, One Day as a Lion). The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!, meanwhile, have caused a stir closer to home with their high-energy gigs and ridiculous costuming. The tale of the third "Three Inches" artist, however, is a sad one: Brazil native Yoñlu recorded a number of intensely personal folk pop songs and shared them via message boards before taking his own life at the age of 16.
For a more in-depth (and, uh, totally corny) look at each of these acts, check out Luaka Bop's promotional video for the "Three Inches" series right here.
Don't be thrown off, through: each volume in the "Three Inches of Music" series will actually come on a standard 5" CD, and not one of those annoying-ass 3" CDs that won't play in your Mac. Instead, the idea is that these releases will each contain enough music to occupy roughly three inches of the disc's diameter-- which equates to three tracks in the case of the first batch. Jeez guys, as if foreign countries and other languages weren't confusing enough, y'all have to go and perplex us with your concept too.
Much more straightforward: a Luaka Bop CMJ party, the label's first in some 14 years. Look for that, complete with a performance from the Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!, to take over Santos Party House on the evening of Friday, October 24.
