Turn Your iPhone Into a Four-Track Recorder

Wired's Listening Post blog has tipped us off to another cool-looking iPhone application. Because even if you don't have an iPhone, at least you can fantasize about all the cool things you would do if you had one.

The app-- from Sonoma Wire Works-- is called FourTrack, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a four-track recorder for your iPhone or iPod Touch (that's a picture of the interface above). For $9.99, any aspiring John Darnielle can record and mix as many songs as his or her iPhone will hold, then transfer them to a computer for further work.

Per Listening Post, some kinks remain:

The iPhone's built-in speaker is too soft to allow the program to be used in any meaningful way without headphones, and not every pair of headphones has a skinny enough jack to fit into the first-generation iPhone. Plus, there's currently no way to use a high-quality mic, and the software doesn't work on the first-generation iPod Touch -- just second-generation models that can be used with a third-party microphone).

Nonetheless, it seems like a pretty useful app for folks with musical ideas that just will not wait. Listening Post has a good rundown of how the thing works, complete with screen shots.

If FourTrack catches on, we predict any one of the following things will happen:

A) Ryan Adams' output balloons to the point where his catalog comprises 75% of all recorded music.

B) Timbaland uses this thing to stage a comeback and make us forget about all the crap he's put out recently.

C) Live shows become extinct as all bands record songs on their iPhones and upload them directly to MySpace. Most of these bands still suck.

D) Most family get-togethers end in the recording of an embarrassing rap track.
