Jurassic 5 Reissue, Expand Debut LP
Some day years from now at some future-store, two friends will see Jurassic 5's debut LP, J5. They'll listen to it, and one of them will say, "Now this is golden age hip-hop," before the other chimes in, "Um... this came out in 1997, in EP form, dummy." Then they'll agree that it doesn't matter because it's a perfectly pleasant record, and they'll go home and play it while imagining how cool Chali 2na must have been.
But the reason J5 will be there in the first place is because Decon Records rescued it from being out of print since 2004 with a deluxe reissue that is out this week. In addition to the original EP, J5 Deluxe Re-Issue includes the material tacked on to create 1998's J5 full-length and a bonus disc of exclusive and rare tracks. It also comes with a documentary called The Jurassic Period, 30-minutes of performance footage in the form of Jurassic 5 at Brixton Academy, and the video for "Concrete Schoolyard".
J5 remain broken up, but members Chali 2na, Cut Chemist, DJ Nu-Mark, and Akil all have shows listed on their MySpace pages.
