The Oscar nominations have been announced, and the biggest surprise in the Best Original Song category isn't what has been nominated, but rather what hasn't.

"O...Saya", M.I.A.'s collaboration with composer A.R. Rahman from Slumdog Millionaire, garnered a nod, as "Jai Ho", another A.R. Rahman song from Slumdog, featuring Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, and Mahalaxmi Iyer. Rahman also picked up a nomination for Best Original Score for his Slumdog music. (As previously reported, the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack is out now on M.I.A.'s N.E.E.T. imprint via Interscope.)

Rounding out the Best Original Song nominees is Peter Gabriel's Wall-E track "Down to Earth".

And that's it.

So where's Bruce Springsteen, who was thought to be a shoo-in for "The Wrestler", his end-credits exhale of a track from The Wrestler? The song already picked up a Golden Globe a couple weeks back, and would have been the third time His Bossness had been nominated for a naked golden guy after 1993's winning with "Streets of Philadelphia" (from Philadelphia) and 1995's losing with "Dead Man Walkin'" (from, um, Dead Man Walking). What happened? Who knows. The Oscars work in mysterious ways.

The 81st Annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a televised ceremony on February 22.
