News You Might Have Missed
Technical difficulties? What technical difficulties?
Last week, our website went on a massive bender. It got wasted on Zima and horse tranquilizers, robbed a clown supply store, and then stole a Segway, which it crashed into a towering pile of tin cans. By the time we sprang it from jail and got its stomach pumped, it was Thursday night, and we'd missed almost a week's worth of news. Fortunately, it was back in top form on Friday, ready to tell everybody about the Coachella lineup, Springsteen's Wal-Mart mea culpa, Lil Wayne and Katie Couric, and, of course, Morrissey baring (almost) all.
So, in case you missed the many stories we posted on January 26-29, here's a quick rundown of some highlights:
MONDAY, January 26:
- Lil Wayne's rock album, Rebirth, is set for an April 7 release. From the sounds of first single "Prom Queen" and leaked track "Hot Revolver", it is going to be terrible.
- The Black Lips encountered some trouble in India when they bared a bit of skin at a concert in Chennai. But they made it out of the country safely, and are currently in Germany hanging out with King Khan.
- PJ Harvey has written the soundtrack for the latest revival of Hedda Gabler on Broadway, starring Mary Louise-Parker. She also said in an interivew that she's interested in doing comedy. No, really.
TUESDAY, January 27:
- Charlie Cooper, half of the electronic duo Telefon Tel Aviv, was found dead in Chicago at age 31. On the band's MySpace page, Cooper's Telefon Tel Aviv partner Joshua Eustis wrote, "His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved."
- Wale has been working with TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek on a couple of tracks for his forthcoming debut album. TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe will possibly sing on one of the songs, while Saul Williams may sing on the other.
- Michael Jackson's Thriller is going to be made into a Broadway musical. Sigh.
- Diplo and Switch are working on a dancehall album under the name Major Lazer. M.I.A., Santogold, Kelis, Nina Sky, and Busy Signal are among the vocalists who have contributed to the project.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28:
- Animal Collective, Bon Iver, and Andrew Bird all hit the top 20 of the Billboard 200 chart with their new releases.
- Muxtape relaunched in somewhat diminished capacity, though it still looks pretty cool.
- Death Cab for Cutie discovered that the videos from their last two albums don't play on their website because Warner Music Group removed all of its content from YouTube due to a licensing dispute. That made Death Cab sad, as most things in life do.
- The new Mastodon album cover slays, as usual.
- Rachael Ray is having another SXSW party, and the Hold Steady are probably playing it. Do they make beer with EVOO in it?
THURSDAY, JANUARY 29:
- Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold took to his band's MySpace page to dispel rumors that Fleet Foxes had signed to Virgin. He wrote, "Fleet Foxes will never, ever, under no circumstances, from now until the world chokes on gas fumes, sign to a major label. This includes all subsidiaries or permutations thereunder. Till we die." But did he know that Warner Music Group owns a 49% stake in Sub Pop? Oops! The blog post has since been removed.
- Bob Dylan and Will.I.Am teamed up with Pepsi for a Super Bowl ad. The times, they are a-changin'.
- Folk-jazz icon John Martyn died at the age of 60.
- Super Furry Animals and Metric announced new albums coming this April.
