Kim Gordon Partners With Urban Outfitters

Because apparently there's no such thing as "too cool" anymore
Kim Gordon Partners With Urban Outfitters

Get ready for another fun round of accusatory blog posts and defensive interview quotes: Sonic Youth are selling out again! First there was the Starbucks hits compilation, and now they're getting down with Urban Outfitters. Go ahead, get mad. (Remember, they signed to Matador, so you can't be mad at them for being on a major label anymore. Sorry.)

Last September, SY bassist/singer Kim Gordon launched her Mirror/Dash clothing line, her first venture into fashion since her fabled X-Girl line. Gordon, who designs the line along with Jeffrey Monteiro and Melinda Wansbrough, founded Mirror/Dash because, as she told the New York Times, "there's a need for clothes for cool moms." She started things off with the Hardy Jacket, limiting that first garment's run to fifty copies and selling it at a recession-friendly $415.

Yesterday, in a blog post on the SY MySpace page, she announced that the entire clothing line would become available next Monday, February 16, exclusively at Urban Outfitters. There, they will presumably share rack space with fake thrift store T-shirts and noisemakers that blurt out Superbad sound bites.

In another interview with the New York Times, Gordon describes the line thusly: "We're actually trying to do something a little less trend oriented, a little more classic, that might appeal to someone say who used to shop at Urban [Outfitters] but wants something slightly less young looking. And we would like to appeal also to the usual Urban customer as well."

So now we have also learned that Kim Gordon is one of those people who just says "Urban" instead of "Urban Outfitters."

And before you get too bent out of shape, remember: this isn't the first time Sonic Youth and Urban Outfitters have crossed paths.
