Circus Lupus Bassist Forms New Band
Seth Corinczi of the defunct Dischord post-punk band Circus Lupus, has turned up in a new trio, the Quails. Their simply-titled debut, We are the Quails, was produced by the Fucking Champs' Tim Green and released earlier this month through an awfully convoluted distribution deal which ultimately winds up being Troubleman Unlimited-related. Not that it's apparent without some digging around.
The twists and turns don't stop there. Corinczi's bandmates, vocalist/guitarist Jen Smith and drummer Julianna Bright, originate from bands that are veritably unknown outside of San Francisco. Cha Cha Cabaret and Electrolettes ring any bells? Should I even mention that Corinczi and Tim Green were in a number of bands together, including the equally obscure Vile Cherubs?
No matter, the band has an explanation for their sound: "Punk, folk, and soul as springboards for stripped-down raw beats and arrangements that examine personal and sexual issues and gender politics in the context of a crowded and stressed urban environment." And you think my sentences are tangled! Other sources say the Quails deliver Ex-style clang-and-thump art-rock. Having toured with the Champs and Q and Not U in the past, you will certainly hear more from them. Unless they dissolve as quickly as they have appeared.
