Mellow to Score Roman Coppola's CQ
Just like Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female, Mellow are attempting to move in with Air, cut their hair just like 'em and steal their boyfriends. Air and Mellow have always had their similarities: both are French, and both are heavily influenced by the smooth sounds of 60s lounge-pop. But here's where Mellow get scary: following the beret trail Air laid by scoring Sofia Coppola's film debut The Virgin Suicides, Mellow have scored the soundtrack to their own Coppola sibling's feature film debut-- her brother Roman's CQ. If it's anything like his music videos for the Strokes' "Last Nite" and "Hard to Explain," expect lots of sad posturing, expensive haircuts (like the ones John Lydon gets!) and gimmicky stock footage us hipsters are supposed to eat up like Thai cuisine. At least it can't flop harder than Francis Ford's Tucker: A Man and His Dream.
The film, currently in the 14 theaters that aren't playing Men In Black II, stars Jeremy Davies as the director of a 60s sci-fi extravaganza who eventually loses touch with reality and becomes obsessed with a character from his film. Rounding out the cast are Gerard Depardieu, Billy Zane and yet another Coppola relative, Jason Schwartzman. The soundtrack also features 60s French pop classics by Jacques Dutronc and Claude Francois. No word yet on when Mellow will feel inspired enough to release their next proper album, which will undoubtedly be called Space Safari. The CQ soundtrack is out now on Los Angeles-based Emperor Norton Records. Tracklist (all tracks by Mellow except where indicated):
