The Microphones Break Up

Aspiring garage rockers already vying for the bandname

According to a recent report from the music website Tiny Mixtapes Gone to Heaven, Phil Elvrum recently revealed that he is officially disbanding his Microphones project. The loose collective-- which has counted Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, The Blow's Khaela Maricich, Karl Blau of D+, Old Time Relijun's Aaron Hartman, Kyle Field of Little Wings, Yume Bitsu's Adam Forkner, Bret Lunsford of Beat Happening, singer/songwriter Anna Oxygen, and of course, Calvin Johnson among its many contributors-- has been active since 1999, and has released four "official" albums, several piecemeal full-lengths, and countless seven-inches (the latter of which were collected on last year's Song Islands release).

Elvrum reportedly told the website that "The Microphones broke up, actually, because I did," likely referring to the conclusion of the newly released Mount Eerie. He revealed that he will, however, continue recording under a new moniker-- the appropriate (if confusing) Mount Eerie-- though it was unclear at press time whether he would be working with the same collaborators on the new project. Mount Eerie will be embarking on its premiere U.S. tour in May, after Elvrum returns from touring abroad.
