Radiohead Announce Release Date for New Album

Which we guess means we should all be hearing it sometime in April!

Kevin Keenan, Chris Leslie-Hynan and Ryan Schreiber have sex together:
According to the kind and proper folks over at New Musical Express, Radiohead have announced a drop date for their brand new full-length. The new record, which will be the group's sixth studio effort, will be released on June 9th (probably June 10th in the U.S.), with the first single set to hit the shelves on May 16th. The record is said to be operating under two different working titles: 2+2=5 and Are You Listening. The poll-winning Pitchfork staff choice, We Smell Another 10.0, has been abjectly refused by Capitol Records. There's no word yet on which track is expected as the first single, but fansite Greenplastic.com has speculated that it may be "Where I End and You Begin".

As for new juice on what may be contained within: According to XFM, Keith Rosencroft of Parlophone Records told guests at an exclusive record company showcase that the new album was currently in the mixing stage at a Los Angeles studio where the band have been working with producer Nigel Godrich. Rosencroft stated that Yorke gives a particularly "emotional" performance. So... what can we tell you? All we've heard are the live versions bootlegged from shows in Spain and Portugal-- judging from those, the album should continue in the dark vein of Kid A and Amnesiac, with less of the electronic embellishments those records so favored. Then again, live versions of Radiohead songs tend to differ greatly from the studio recordings, so it's just plain impossible to know. Regardless, here's a possible tracklist:

01 There There
02 Myxomatosis
03 We Suck Young Blood
04 Where I End and You Begin
05 Scatterbrain
06 Up on the Ladder
07 Sail to the Moon
08 Punch Up at a Wedding
09 Sit Down Stand Up
10 2+2=5
11 I Will
12 Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)

Though unconfirmed, it's been widely speculated that Radiohead will not likely be making their way to the U.S. in support of the album, but recently, rumors have been flying that the band might headline California's Coachella Music and Arts Festival on April 27th. In the meantime, Radiohead are definite for both the Southside and Hurricane festivals in Germany, as well as the Hultsfred Festival in Sweden, the Belfort Festival in France, and as announced just today, the Glastonbury Festival in England. Dates:

06-13 Sweden - Hultsfred Festival
06-20 Germany - Southside Festival
06-22 Germany - Hurricane Festival
06-28 England - Glastonbury
07-04 France - Les Eurockennes de Belfort Festival

Meanwhile, Radiohead guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood has composed a score for an independent film titled Bodysong, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam late last month. Said Greenwood of the project, "Most film score writing demands discipline. You have to use click-tracks, and provide music that makes its point in, say, 20 seconds, and even leaves spaces for dialogue. This wasn't true with Bodysong, which meant I could let musicians play at tempos that felt right. So I had the luxury of just concentrating on trying to put some kind of mood across." Greenwood employed both jazz players and the England-based Emperor String Quartet during the sessions to flesh out his own guitarwork, beat programming, piano and keyboards. There is no release date for the soundtrack as yet, though there is speculation that it may be issued by the UK-based electronic label Certificate 18. The official Bodysong website features several brief clips of Greenwood's score.

And finally, in a sad bit of Radiohead-related news, Greenplastic is reporting that the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia was awoken one morning to the strains of "Fake Plastic Trees". Apparently, flight controllers at Mission Control Center selected music to rouse the crew with each morning, and on day five the song was played and dedicated to pilot William C. McCool, who responded that "Radiohead is my favorite group." The site also reported that McCool brought a copy of OK Computer with him on the shuttle. But enough of that, did we tell you that Radiohead's new album comes out on June 9th?!
