Broken Social Scene Launch North American Tour
Let's lay this out on the table right now: I'm just not going to be able to write this piece with the usual journalistic objectivity, despite how very seriously we at the Pitchfork Newswire generally take that. So instead, I'll rip a page out the Fox News rulebook (curiously titled The Complete Idiot's Guide to Journalism-- and look, Cliff Claven's on the cover!) and abandon objectivity all together.
Let's start where our fearless leader Ryan's review of Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It in People left off: "And I hate to end this saying, 'You just have to hear it for yourself.' But oh my god, you do. You just really, really do." My sentiments exactly. It's goosebumps good. For what it's worth, someone's going to have to move heaven and earth to knock this out of my top spot come the end of the year. But enough gushing... SIKE!
This Toronto indie pop collective, consists of a shitload of musicians-- in the neighborhood of 10-15. The actual founding members, Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, have brought together various musicians from the double-hott Canadian indie rock scene (including members of Stars, Do Make Say Think, Treble Charger, KC Accidental, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Mascott), and have been tearing down houses across the provences ever since.
According to Canada's ChartAttack in a review of their recent Canadian Music Week performance in
Toronto: "Everyone has said that Broken Social Scene has to be seen to be believed. True to form, the
guitar and brass jamming was a thing of wonder. Their energy fueled the crowd's energy and vice versa.
By the end of their set, it was a big, happy, frenzied love-in." That's right, you body-jackin'
motherfuckers, it's one big, freeform, universal get-together. You don't even have to shave your pits!
(No, guys, you either.)
With all this in mind, and the record on continuous repeat in our numerous branch offices (read: apartments),
we're happy to report even a baker's dozen of appearances for this Toronto dynamo. Of course, we'd think it
was pretty cool if, say, more than five of them took place in the United States, but shit, they're already
promising more dates to come on their message board, so who knows. East Coast, kids? Midwest? (We're
holding our breath until.) In the meantime, let's just say you're a lucky dog if you live in one of these
places:
03-15 Austin, TX - Momo's (SXSW Showcase)
