Iron & Wine Guitarist Readies Solo Debut
But Sub Pop too taken with Rilo Kiley side project to bother

Patrick McKinney, likely best known for his instrumentation in beardfolk paragons Iron & Wine, is set to release his solo debut on June 29th. As you might expect, McKinney's music, recorded under the pseudonym Langtry, is, like Iron & Wine, anticipated to hold roots in folk music. But wait for the plot twist! The songs, which are predominantly instrumental, are reported to have quite the experimental bent.

In addition to taking cues from forward-thinking folksters such as John Fahey and Robbie Basho, McKinney's love for alchemical stalwarts such as Captain Beefheart and Sun City Girls play a major role in his material, aligning it more closely with the recent free-folk movement (see also: Jewelled Antler Collective, Charalambides, Black Forest/Black Sea). McKinney's album, entitled As Upon the Road Thereto, will be released next month on the Tallahassee-based experimental label Soft Abuse.
