Flaming Lips Cover White Stripes on New Single

The love between The Flaming Lips and The White Stripes is perhaps best illustrated by the former band's song "Thank You Jack White (for the Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me)", which was included on the Lips' 2003 EP Fight Test. Or maybe it was the gift of the Fiber-Optic Jesus in the first place. Or perhaps it was when the Lips subsequently filled in for the Stripes during the 2003 summer festival season (due to Jack White's injured hand), and during that set covered "Seven Nation Army". Well, whatever the case, they've apparently decided to make it official, and on February 1st The Flaming Lips are set to release a 7" of "Seven Nation Army" through Azuli Records in the UK. The record will be limited to a stingy 75 copies, and contains these two tracks:

01 "Seven Nation Army (Harry Potter and George W. Bush Severed Head Mix)"
02 David Shrigley: "The Jist"

But why is the b-side a non-Flaming Lips song? And where can we get a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" bereft of mytho-political statements? Fortunately, Coyne and co. have the answers. Later in the year, the band will become the latest in an ever-increasing line of artists issuing compilations of their favorite music. Set to be released on March 7th via Azuli Records, the compilation will include a presumably more straight-laced cover of "Seven Nation Army", as well as Shrigley's "The Jist" and songs from, among others, Lush, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Miles Davis, Björk, and Aphex Twin. The CD will be available for pre-order sometime in January, and both the compilation and the 7" will be available only through Azuli's website. The songs themselves will live in the Lips' hearts forever:

01 Björk: "Unravel"
02 Miles Davis: "My Ship"
03 Chris Bell: "Speed of Sound"
04 Faust: "It's a Bit of a Pain"
05 Roxy Music: "2HB"
06 Alfie: "People"
07 Aphex Twin: "Flim"
08 Mice Parade: "Galileo"
09 The Chameleons UK: "Up the Down Escalator"
10 The Flaming Lips: "Seven Nation Army"
11 The Chemical Brothers: "Playground for a Wedgeless Firm"
12 Love and Rockets: "Saudade"
13 Lush: "Monochrome"
14 The Psychedelic Furs: "Sleep Comes Down"
15 Nick Drake: "River Man"
16 Sebadoh: "On Fire"
17 Radiohead: "Pyramid Song"
18 10CC: "I'm Not in Love"
19 Brian Eno: "Another Green World"
20 David Shrigley: "The Jist"

As previously reported, The Flaming Lips will be spending New Year's Eve with Sleater-Kinney and Wilco in a glorious three-way to take place in Madison Square Garden.
