Björk Preps 2xCD Remix Comp, New Single

Rob Harvilla reports:
So it's Martin Luther King Day. A holiday. And you've no barbecues or NFL playoff games to delight and entertain you. How will you pass today's lonely hours? Might we suggest remixing Björk's "Army of Me"? Like, right now? Iceland's finest has issued an open call for remixes and cover versions of the tune (which led off her '95 record Post), with the highlights to be collected on a two-disc charity release. Anyone can give it a shot, and the deadline's... oh, shit. Today!

"Army of Me" has already inspired high-profile covers from the venerables likes of Helmet and, uh, Powerman 5000. But evidently, plenty of amateurs have tried their hand at the track as well. "Björk has consistently been sent unsolicited re-mixes and cover versions of the song," reports Bjork.com. "Inspired no doubt by the growling techno-metal of the original, and the eclectic mixes that were featured on the original singles, mixes and cover versions have ranged from hi-energy to death-metal. For years these versions of the song have lain, gathering dust, in a corner of Björk's office. Björk has now decided to release these and new mixes and cover versions on a 2-CD album in order to raise funds for UNICEF."

One Little Indian hopes to release the album by late February/early March, which accounts for the rushed deadline. But if you've got a couple hours to kill (and hopefully some talent), send yer 128kbs MP3s to bjorkremixes@gmail.com, with your band/DJ name and full details/credits included. (Note: the moniker "Danger Mouse" is already taken-- although "Leatherhead" may still be available.)

For those who prefer simply listening to Björk, her site has also announced that the next single from her recent Medulla LP will be "Triumph of a Heart". Though the official release date is in flux with all this "Army of Me" business, look for three separate releases in mid-February, with the usual (professionally) remixed/revamped Medulla tracks as B-sides, with a Spike Jonze video to boot. Three discs, say we:

>> Disc 1
01 Triumph of a Heart (Radio Edit)
02 Desired Constellation (Ben Frost's School of Emotional Engineering Mix)

>> Disc 2
01 Triumph of a Heart (Audition Mix)
02 Vškur— (Gonzalez Mix)
03 Mouth's Cradle - Mouth (Recomposed by Ensemble)

>> DVD Single
01 Triumph of a Heart - Video (directed by Spike Jonze)
02 Oceania (Piano & Vocal)
03 Desired Constellation (Choir Mix)
